Vacation Day 2 – Old People and Mountains Don’t Mix

Tennesse isn’t so bad. Sure it’s a bit “hick”, but I have a strange affection for it. Today we went up into the Smokey Mountains for some hiking and sight seeing.

Here are a few highlights.

  • I was exhausted from getting up at 5am and driving yesterday, so I slept in about a couple of hours after Bethany got up. At one point she came back in the room and I felt a strange sensation around me. Bethany couldn’t stand leaving the bed undone, so she decided to make her side of the bed with me in it. Thanks.
  • On the way up to Clingman’s Dome we got behind an RV. An old RV complete with old people. Old people with a handicap placard. I’m not sure what they were trying to accomplish, but if they were trying to set the pace at 20 miles per hour below the speed limit, they were exceeding everyone’s expectations. It was amazing in its brilliance. As we crept up the mountain, we decided to stop at one of those lookout/photo places. Coincidentally, so did “Old Crippled RV people”. Thanks to our youth and dexterity, we were able to get out, take pictures and beat the old people to our vehicles. Ha! Who’s setting the pace now?
  • Then, while we were hiking up Clingman’s Dome (a really high point in the Smokey’s) we were met with another old woman who was passing out from exhaustion. It was quite a sight, because several rescue vehicles came to aid her and caused quite a scene.
  • On the way down, Jim was talking about how tiring it was and made a comment that no one heard. When asked to repeat it, Jim said, “We can do it because of our leg strength.” At just that moment, he was walking past someone in an electric wheelchair. Priceless.

It’s been great so far. We taught Jim and Sam how to play the card game “President” and stayed up watching Tommy Boy. I’ll have more updates for tomorrow.
