We started a new series tonight in our youth service called Life Lessons from Legos. This first message focused on Creativity. The very first description of God in the Bible is that of creativity. We focus so much on God’s grace and mercy and love, yet the Bible doesn’t start with something like, “In the beginning, God was love.” No instead it says that He created the heavens and the earth. In fact, God is more than just the Creator; He is Creativity itself. He forms nothing into something and He takes broken nothings and makes them somethings.
That’s where we come in. At the first mention of man, Genesis makes it clear that we are formed in the image of God (in other words, He’s creative and therefore we should be too). The first command that man is given is to create (or more literally procreate). The instruction to “subdue” the earth and rule over it, is essentially a command to create a certain kind of new existence here and now.
So here’s a few conclusions:
- Followers of Christ ought to be creative
- We have been “recreated” as believers (2 Cor. 5:17)
- The Church has the role of bringing new life, restoration and repair (creation) to the world.
