Tonight, Phil Wickham led worship at a nearby church. Aldo, Jason, Carrie and I decided to take the trek north to see him and be a part of the experience. It’s my second time seeing him live and I was again blown away with his abilities and talents.
The last time I saw him, it was a concert setting. Amid performing songs from his album, he led the audience in some worship songs, but it still had the “concert” feel.
Tonight was very different, however. Though he did play some of the songs off his albums (which are worshipful already) it was much more of a worship setting. He’s extremely gifted and came across as very sincere. It helps, too, that he’s a great guitar player. His style of playing “Amazing Love” was inspiring. I know that sounds goofy, but although I’ve enjoyed the song, it’s become dated to me. I also always struggle with the regular rhythm of the song. It’s not a matter of being able to play it, but I’ve never really liked how it sounded with a guitar…until tonight, that is.
I suppose the best part of the night for me was the fact that I didn’t have any responsibilities. It’s rare on Sundays and Wednesdays for me to get a chance to really sit back and worship without leading, preparing for announcements or taking care of other issue. It was a very refreshing and renewing experience for me.
Anyway, with Christmas around the corner, you may be looking for that perfect gift. Do yourself a favor and buy one of his albums for yourself and then buy another copy(ies) for your family and friends. I think he’s one of the best artists in Christian music right now and he deserves more attention.
