free thinkers

I found this image a couple of weeks ago and it’s been sitting on my desktop until now. I’ve been trying to figure out what to say about it, but I realized tonight that part of my hesitation is actually a mixture of sadness, bewilderment, frustration and shock.

Needless to say, I have a real problem with this church’s view on “free thinking.”

Statements like this are motivated by fear and ignorance. They don’t help the church, they force it into a box. The message is simple. Just accept the truth and don’t question a thing. Believe it because someone said that the Bible says it.

Discovery, questioning and evaluation are important aspects of Christianity. They are essential stops on our journey of faith. The process thinking freely brings about ownership of our beliefs and strength for our convictions.

God gave you a mind. Let’s use it, people.

  1. You know, I have to say, I’ve looked at this a couple of times now… I agree with your thoughts…. I just can’t figure out exactly what point they were trying to get across?? Maybe signs like this are why so many “unchurched” people think religion, God and the Bible is “just too confusing” to get involved in. Kinda sad… God doesn’t want anyone to be confused!
