Today I took my son, Kent, to his first day of Pre-PreSchool. Apparently you need to prepare for something that is meant to prepare you for something else. It’s a one hour per week class at the local park district.

Bethany gave me one important task for his first day: take a picture of him with his backpack on in front of the building. As you can see from the series of pictures, Kent wasn’t too happy about wearing the backpack. He wasn’t upset about school, just that I had the audacity to try to get him to pose for the camera.

He made it through class fine, except for the fact that he didn’t want to participate in Ring Around the Rosie at the end. He kept saying something about wanting more snacks….

traffic tuesday #9 – slow, fast, slow

The Speed Limit is important when driving. I like to refer to it as a necessary evil, because I usually find myself hovering just over the limit. There are some people who drive faster than the limit, some exactly at the limit and others below the limit.

Those each of these types can be aggravating, annoying, even dangerous on the road, the worst offender is the driver who does all three.

Driving 7 1/2 hours to and from college for four years, and taking students to and from countless events has provided me with an abundance of experience with these drivers on the highway. Based on that experience, here’s my best guesses as to why this phenomenon occurs:

  • Cruise control is broken. Actually, it’s not broken, but these people just don’t understand the concept of pressing a button to set their speed.
  • Cell Phone Distraction. I’m one of those people who believes that talking on a cell phone while driving doesn’t effect them. In reality, it does and people have no clue what’s going on when they do it.
  • The power of music compels the driver to operate the vehicle’s speed based on the tempo of the music coming from the radio (at least that’s what I learned from how they power the rocket ship on Little Einsteins).
  • They want to constantly maintain “Pole Position.” Even though you understand how and have the motor skills necessary to push a button and set your speed, these people think you are trying to race them. Once you pass them, they think they’re losing the race you aren’t in and so they speed past you. After getting ahead, they eventually forget the imaginary race they were in and slow down. Of course, you’ll catch up again and the process will repeat.

drop outs

I recently subscribed to the RSS Feed for neueministry.com. From their site:

Neue (pronounced “new”) is a creative resource and collaborative community focused specifically on the issues, challenges and opportunities facing emerging ministry leaders.

Today they posted a link to an article from Lifeway Research about a recent study they did on young adults leaving the church. According to their research, more than 2/3 of them (between the ages of 18-22) will stop attending church regularly for at least a year.

As a youth pastor, my job isn’t just to bring students through high school, but to help prepare them for the future. One of the values I want to instill in students is the importance of staying connected to others. It’s the idea that our relationship with God doesn’t happen in a vacuum. We need the love, encouragement and support of others along the way. Hopefully I’m providing opportunities for this to occur and my prayer is that these relationships will be the “glue” (as the article puts it) that keeps these students connected through times of transition.

Anyway, just some thoughts.

Today we had our annual Speed the Light service at Stone Church. I typically have one chance per year to speak to the congregation as a whole during this missions-focused service. I love having the opportunity to do this, but I must say, I’m wiped out. Planning, preparing and speaking at all three weekend service (Saturday evening and two today) takes quite a bit out of you.

I’m not sure how it happened, but I didn’t plan out the youth calendar for this month very well. We had Open Gym on Friday. I spoke yesterday and today. This Wednesday night we have a special outreach event planned for our students and Saturday we hold our Fall Fest.

I’m not sure what I was thinking, but it should be fun getting through it all.
